Front and Centre Thinking – the Frontal Cortex

3–4 minutes

Think! All you have to do is think!

Assuming you are telling yourself this then it’s a bit crazy as it’s your Frontal Cortex, which I’ll shorten to FrontC, letting your FrontC to do what FrontC does – think. By think I mean to take in information, mix it with memories, and try and come up with an output or decision. Here I look at FrontC as a wonder of not just you but frankly the universe.

You Really Should Listen to Me

FrontC is that friend that you should always have and always want to listen to but more often than you’d want (or admit) you don’t. Whilst AnyG and friends is constantly on the lookout for danger and excitement FrontC is trying to give you help in not making a decision (as discussed if there’s get really hairy AmyG has permission to skip fast FrontC) but to help you make the right decision based on what you know. This information is purely as a recommendation for you to take or ignore but it’s normally the best long term decision. The purpose of FrontC is to provide excellent analysis to not just allow you to survive but to flourish.

Last to Arrive, First to Go – Personality and FrontC

FrontC is the last part of your body to mature remarkably sometime in your mid-20s. The reason for this is everything else has to be in place first for FrontC to add that special Homo sapien edge to life. This lifecycle explains why in your early years when you are physically still growing you have a sense of adventure as you mature into the world as an individual but also into a social group.

Once matured FrontC works 24hours to make you the best you can be through cognitive function in not only decision making like moving from one place to another but a deeper sense of self and presence in the universe. ‘Now hold on there. I thought this site was about science and not this spiritual Mumbo-Jumbo stuff!’ Yes it is and one of things that humans uniquely have evolved to do is to know about the past (that’s not too tricky as we can lay these down in genes) but also think about not just the future but possible futures. Many animals prepare for the future by laying down reserves for the winter but non create experiments that explain the possible futures. All this is done by FrontC and friends many who live in the memory and learning departments.

The size and importance of FrontC to normal human behaviour makes it vulnerable to problems that affect fundamental parts of a person – their personality. As a person gets older any problems in FrontC can manifest themselves as being internally personal i.e. who we identify ourselves as which may not be who we want people to see ourselves as. The obvious example of this is in dementia a collective term to describe a decline in brain function as a whole.

There are many types of dementia and the details of each are not important at this time but all see a decrease in brain activity. When the Front Cortex is affected this affects memory recall, simple decision making, emotional stability – everything that defines a personality. Due to the importance of this part of the brain it is often the first detectable signs of deterioration often internally by that person first small things like remembering things which happens to us all at some time but then on to more fundamental memory – loved ones, key memories etc. For the friend or relative this can be confusing, worrying and at time annoying but it’s not a deliberate action it’s the brain overall not working as well as it did and FrontC being at the forefront of personality and behavioural changes.

Talking of FrontC and personality and recovery let me introduce to the amazing Phineas Gage and The Greatest Showman.
