Tools

Here are a selection of tools that we recommend you use as we find them very helpful in our work in improving performance. If you’d like to know to use them in detail then we have classes on how to setup and use these tools.

Menti and Mentimeter

Mentimeter is an interactive web based product that allows people to respond to a or a set of questions that are posed in real time. Mentimeter is really helpful to engage a group of people rather than just talk at people or ask people to come up with their own questions.

Miro

Miro is a powerful collaboration visualisation tool that allows teams to work on a single screen to dump down ideas to show how people are thinking. Miro was formerly known as Realtime Board. There are templates to help shape the conversation. In affect it’s like having a big physical wall where teams can gather around and stick things on it.

The advantage is you can have lots of people working on a shared screen which is ideal for remote teams be they developers, working groups, or operations teams.

The disadvantage is that it works well on big screens where you can see the bigger picture which you can stand back from. It’s not so great on a small screen where you can to constantly zoom in and out and from side to side. Another disadvantage is the reliance on pictures and small notes. Great for capturing the high level but not the technical detail or anything that is written e.g. a contract.

It’s free to use if you have a business email e.g. not gmail, hotmail, anything mail. There are paid options for more advanced features.

Mural

Mural is a web based collaborative highly visual electronic board application that aids conversation either in place or remotely. The aim of Mural is to create a highly interactive shared space to aid design, people’s thinking by using standard templates and interactive objects to create a shared board or view of what people think.

The advantage of Mural is that lots of people can join on a single board in real time. The application of templates, timers, voting dots and other tools make the application higher interactive and responsive in a highly visible way.

The disadvantage of Mural (another interactive shared boards) is the amount of stuff on a single screen. If you have a large monitor then it is fine however on small screens you can lose track of where you are (Mural does provide a high level map view to help with this). Also highly detailed items can be difficult to read as it has to fit on to a standard object e.g. a sticky note.

Trello

Trello is a simple but powerful tool where you create tickets and put the tickets into lists and then move them around on a Trello Board. Can be used as a good way to tracking work and activities in a highly visible way. Boards can be public and private and come with templates to speed things up.
